Geek Identification Disaster
This is one in our ‘Geek Like Me’ series of columns exploring the nuances of geek culture.
Currently, I have been having somewhat of a geek identification disaster. “Why ” it’s possible you’ll ask. “Geeks rule the college as of late! We got an X-Men movie, a Green Lantern movie, a Thor film and a Captain America movie all in one summer! We have lastly inherited the earth!”
I do know, I know. And i never might have dreamt in my comedian book-gathering, D&D enjoying, Doctor Who convention-attending youth that this day would really come, regardless of what number of times I prayed to the Elder Gods for it to occur. However here we are. Like Christians and their little rear bumper fish, as soon as upon a time, me sporting a Green Lantern t-shirt was my secret beacon to others like me, the black eye and subtle nod as I handed someone else who knew Tyler Durden. I knew in a heartbeat we’d be ready to speak to one another. It was a simple sign that we shared a language, a history, likes and dislikes, ardour, security. But I am unable to be sure anymore. The emblem on my shirt may simply imply that I watch Large Bang Concept, and that I would not be ready to tell Wally West from Barry Allen. And even know who they had been. It’s gotten to the place I bristle on the mere point out of the word “geek”. I can not belief it anymore, and unless you’re referring to a sideshow act who bites the heads off reside chickens, I don’t want to listen to it.
Studying over what I’ve simply written I sound, outdated, bitter, elitist, and whiny. It’s not true. Or possibly it’s. That is an id crisis, after all. To make certain, I love getting access to all the geeky stuff we have right this moment. I can watch a number of lifetimes price of geeky Tv and movies on the push of a button. And if I need to go deeper, I can play video games that put me within the worlds I’ve always fantasized about living in. I can order precise replica rayguns and motion figures and find any comic book I would like on the web, without even having to journey to a convention within the hope that perhaps somebody will be promoting it. size matters shirts And that’s simply in my free time. My “job” is enjoying the characters I’ve performed since I was three years old. Creating the subsequent line of things that I might have obsessed about when I used to be half my age now, rubbing shoulders with folks I’ve admired my whole life, contributing to the mythology that birthed me. I really receives a commission to revel within the factor I’ve at all times cherished. Hardly the job I thought I would grow up to do. Luckily, I haven’t had to develop up to do it. And it seemingly by no means would have turned out this fashion if the key stuff I beloved hadn’t gone mainstream. So, no, I’m not complaining about where we’re at.
So what am I doing I can finally speak about superheroes and spend the weekend playing video video games and never only do I not get beat up for it, there are sizzling women (apart from my wife) who not only put up with it, however love the identical stuff and are not afraid to say so! The incentives are strong to be as big a geek as potential these days. And possibly that’s it. Maybe it is not that I really feel like my secret club has been invaded, and that everyone who used to make fun of us just jumped on the bandwagon, however perhaps it’s that it just was once harder. You actually had to earn the geek mantle. When I used to be youthful I put loads of time into my obsessions. You kinda needed to. If we wanted to see a film, we needed to go to the motion pictures, and if it was something culty, generally we needed to go far to the movies. When the director’s cut of Blade Runner got here out in 1992, we drove a number of hours to see it. If we missed the pilot of Kids within the Corridor on HBO, we had to attend until it was on once more. And since, let’s face it, no person was prepared for Ralph Bakshi’s Mighty Mouse reboot, I did not assume to throw a tape in the machine and record it, so it was years earlier than I used to be capable of finding somebody willing to sell me a bootleg copy so I may watch it once more. And if I couldn’t afford the comic, I could not read the comic. Now, all this stuff is a mouse click away. You used to must be hardcore to reference it precisely. And also you had to observe it 100 instances so that it became part of your vocabulary. Now I can just go to Wikipedia or the IMDb. And I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve. Within the interest of full disclosure, I even did it whereas writing this article to ensure I didn’t embarrass myself.
It being a lot harder again then (he said, rising wearily from his chair and reaching for his pipe) made it really feel like we had been doing all the pieces we may to stay on prime of all our geeky obsessions and that was sufficient. Nowadays, frankly, it is grow to be unattainable. There’s just a lot rattling stuff obtainable! I used to assume I used to be a nerd for maintaining with Blake’s Seven and Doctor Who all at the identical time. But now, I’ve obtained the brand new Who, Torchwood, Sherlock, The IT Crowd, Spaced, Jekyll — and that is simply latest (and not-so-recent) stuff from Britain. Do not even get me started on my own country’s reveals like size matters shirts Battlestar Galactica, Warehouse thirteen, Eureka and The Walking Useless. Add to that all of the stuff I missed that’s now accessible every time I feel prefer it… Look, when I was a kid, there was Star Wars. Mercifully we received 2 other films, but these took some time. Within the meantime, I devoured everything I may find, from film novelizations to Star Wars comedian books, albums, A Splinter within the Thoughts’s Eye, Han Solo at Stars’ End, the NPR radio drama. I used to be hungry and will barely keep myself fed. But now, I can not eat quick sufficient. Star Wars: The Clone Wars is a great present, arguably better than a lot of the films (for those who even rely any past the primary two), however I haven’t got time to watch it every week. This week alone there’s an H.P. Lovecraft Movie Festival, a John Carpenter film festival, a bunch of geeky new reveals premiering within the Fall lineup, new Who, podcasts, DLC for video games I haven’t even cracked the plastic on, blu-ray releases, new anime from Japan… I just can’t sustain anymore.
Whoa, possibly that’s it. Did I just get old I do not even have children and I’m complaining about not having enough time to geek out Hm… Sports fans — who, arguably, are simply geeks who memorize sports activities statistics and paint their faces with their group colors and freak out when their team loses quite than know which episode of Star Trek Harlan Ellison wrote (Ep. 28, “The city on the edge of Perpetually”, by the way), go larping and freak out when Firefly will get canceled — develop outdated and still follow their teams…
Perhaps I simply need a geek off-season, some time for me to catch my breath and catch up on what I missed. Hey, I don’t need to get caught with my pants down. With geeks being in the limelight the way we are, there’s lots of strain to know everything, otherwise you is perhaps revealed as just one other poseur who hopped on the bandwagon to get work in the entertainment industry and decide up chicks. Currently I have been waking up in a chilly sweat fearing that ninjas will show up in the midst of the night to revoke my geek card. I suppose I could simply specialize, however that’s not our approach. Being a real geek is like being a Jack of all Obsessions. Otherwise you’re only a Trekkie.
I guess I ought to just STFU, loosen up, and take pleasure in this embarrassment of riches. If only there was sufficient time in the day. Within the meantime, be at liberty to direct any incorrect geek references you find in this text to Mr.Wikipedia. I’ll be too busy watching illegally downloaded episodes of Naruto.
